First Snow?

Sunday 10 November 2013

With the weather getting colder the last few days, Chatel experiences the first snow at village level that's likely to stay around until the season opens, if it stays cold.  Chatel's Linga and Pre la Joux areas open for weekends of 30 Nov/1 Dec and 7/8 Dec and then every day from 14 Dec.  The above photo was taken from Chatel's village webcam at 2300 today.

Passportes du Soleil

Salon mountain biking demonstration at Passportes du SoleilThe Passportes du Soleil event represents the opening of the summer mountain biking season in the Portes du Soleil.  The lift network opens for the summer and for the Passportes opening weekend, some additional lifts are opened.

The Passportes circuit stretches 80km via the 9 Portes du Soleil villages, made possible to do in 1 day by a network of 20 ski lifts.  6167 riders participated in 2014, a massive increase from the 1343 that competed in the inaugural Passportes in 2004.

This year, Chatel hosted the Salon, which is the bike trade exhibition that accompanies the Passportes du Soleil.  60 exhibitors representing over 150 brands set up in the Pre la Joux area of Chatel and there were also several shows featuring demos and stunts.

Les Lindarets Goat Village - Village des Chevres

Saturday 14 July 2012

3 Lifts from the Pre la Joux ski area of Chatel, between Chatel and Avoriaz lies Les Lindarets, otherwise known as the Goat Village.

A couple of hundred metres down the valley from the Chaux Fleurie lift, the village is full of small craft shops, restaurants and in summer, goats.  It's very picturesque, great for kids and is easily accessible in summer via pedestrian use of the ski lifts or in winter, on skis.

Passportes du Soleil

Saturday 30 June

The mountain-biking season opened for real this weekend with the Passportes du Soleil, an 80km circuit of the Portes du Soleil, using 15 ski lifts to make most of the course mostly in a downhill direction.  The trek takes most of a day and is open from Friday – Sunday.

Chatel village was packed with mountain bikers of varying size, shape, age and fitness or lack thereof, with a few things in common – full suspension bikes, a lot of protective gear and the male/female ratio of a geeks’ beer festival.

Swimming Pool in Chatel France

Chatel began to open for the summer season yesterday.  The swimming pool opened on Saturday and, with the family, we enjoyed a day in the sun in the mountains.  There are 2 pools, a slide and paddling pool for toddlers with a mushroom fountain.  We entered on a multipass, which cost us EUR1/person/day, and my 2 year-old swam free.  6 Euros for two days' activities for a family of four.  Bargain.

It was a bit like the days of the old British lido, only with sun and er... mountains and without the icy cold water as the pools are gently heated.  One slight drawback - it's accepted practice throughout france that male swimmers must wear speedos rather than bermuda shorts, hence the title of this blog entry.  Very retro.

Restaurant at Col du Bassachaux near Chatel

On Sunday, we drove up to the Col de Bassachaux for lunch at the restaurant there.  Excellent place - huge plates of great Savoyarde food, great views and plenty for the kids to do in the restaurant's playground.

In a couple of weeks, the full, summer lift system opens properly, such that you can get to the Lindarets goat village via 3 inter-connecting lifts and only a couple of minutes walk.  More of this in a couple of weeks.

Criterium du Dauphine

Sunday 10 June 2012

Criterium du Dauphine finish

The Criterium Dauphine road cycling event finished in Chatel today, with brit, Bradley Wiggins in first place.

The pro-cycling machine that rolled into town was impressive - enormous team buses, support staff, 000s of Euros worth of carbon-fibre bikes.  It was also easy to get a good view of the finish, either from the apartment balcony which overlooks the hairpin bends that weave up from the Abondance valley or on the finish line itself, where crowds were only 2 or 3 deep and only 50 yards, from the line, you could stand against the fence itself.

Also impressive was the speed of the peleton as it covered the last few hundred metres, uphill and after 124km of hills in the final stage from Morzine via Thonon-les-Bains - it was all over very quickly, which was merciful, given the over-the-air French commentary.

One odd thing - the Office de Tourisme, which is normally excellent for organising visitors and kids' activities in winter and summer seasons, was closed.  Bizarre.  Chatel must have pitched up a sizeable hosting fee to organisers, ASO, to stage the finish of the event; the roads were newly patched up and the Chatel logo stencilled to promote the location on the TV coverage from the helicopter mounted camera view.  There must have been a significant amount of non-locals watching the race and wondering, "hmm, nice place.  I wonder if I could get some information on where to stay when I come back for my skiing/summer hols".

Sunday, still a day of rest in France, if you're not racing a bike.

Monday 4 June 2012

Time flies when you're covered in paint.  What's worse, there's little of interest to add to a blog.  Renovating an apartment is mind-not-just-time, consuming.  In a couple of weeks, I'll at least be able to post some before and after photos.

Great place to spend a week in Chatel. Apartment was beautiful and so were the views from the balcony. Short walk to the center of Chatel and the apartment comes with a secure parking place too. — C Burroughs, 31 Mar 2015
